4/27/08 - 8th District Update
Brothers and Sisters,
With only one week left in the legislative session, I am disappointed in the legislators that we have elected to represent us in Tallahassee. I am even disappointed in my own friend and Representative Ray Samson. This session was a waste of time with only a few important bills for us up for consideration. A bill that would shore up some 175/185 language is being held hostage, I guess for being against Amendment One. They are trying to come together on the budget, the only legislation that must pass, so I believe that this last week will be all about Florida’s Budget.
We will have to work even harder over the summer, getting our grass roots political machine going to show those we have sent and those we want to endorse the importance of Public Safety and remembering who stood with them and supported them when THEY asked for the support. With that, I challenge everyone to become involved in the political process. First, if you are not registered to vote, GET REGISTERED AND GET OUT AND VOTE. You have no grounds to complain if you were not involved in the process. Second, get involved with the candidates and work hard to show them you are serious.
I want to remind everyone of a few things we have coming up. First, our District Meeting and Political Screening will take place in DeFuniak Springs at the Best Western Crossroads Inn on Friday, May 9th. The hotel is located at the intersection of I-10 and Hwy 331. I want everyone there at 0800 and the political screening will start at 0830. At this time we have 3 candidates and each will have 45 minutes to answer questions from us and state to us why they should get our support. After the candidates are finished, the hotel has a lunch buffet and everyone will be on their own. The hotel will not charge us for the room if we have everyone eating at the restaurant. After lunch, we will start our District Meeting were we will discuss the upcoming convention resolutions, our voting plans, discuss the budget for the FPF and talk about proposed legislation. Brothers and Sisters, we need everyone there for the day. We want that show of strength for the candidates who will be attending. We also want as much input to the resolutions as possible. Also, this will be a great opportunity for those young members and leaders to meet and great our Principal Officers for the FPF. Be involved and be there at the District Meeting.
Second, for those in the middle of the District, there will be a go fast boat Poker Run with half the proceeds going to Camp Amigo. I need help and commitments for this event. The people who are sponsoring this are counting on a lot of help from the firefighters. We need people at stops, at the event we will be holding the day of the run, and a showing at the party afterward. The Poker Run will take place on Saturday, June 14th. I know that this is the day after we return from the Convention, so those who are not attending will have to step up and be there. There will be a Captain’s Party the night of June 13th. Here is what I am asking for: COMMITMENTS! I need those who are willing to help to commit to this event. I am asking all area firefighters to assist with this. I don’t care if you are in a local or not, we need to help and raise moneys for the Burn Camp. Legendary Marine came to me asking for our help. We need to come through for them and the kids who attend the Burn Camp. If you are willing to make the commitment, please contact me at 259-1692. I also want everyone to pass this along to those who are not on my email list so we can get the most help.
There is one other event to speak of. FWB Firefighters is hosting a Car and Bike Show at Uptown Station in Fort Walton Beach on Eglin Parkway.

We have a bunch of sponsors & have got a tremendous response from the custom car community. Plan on coming out for a look or just to hang out with the brothers from Local 2601.
Hope to see you there!

The area lost a friend to the Fire Service last week. Retired Chief Frank “Bob” Barrow died after an extended illness. Chief Barrow was the last Chief Warrant Officer of the Air Force upon his retirement in 1992. He was the Fire Chief of many Air Force Fire Departments and a great instructor. He will be missed.
We will need to continue to monitor the effects of Amendment One and report all layoffs, buyouts, reductions, etc. to me or the FPF Office. We will also need to report the amount of revenue reduction because of the Amendment so we can know the effect it is having on budgets. Please get me that information as soon as you can.
I am here to do what ever I can to help you, your members and your local. Please give me a call. I want to remind everyone to also stay up on your per capita payments to both the FPF and the IAFF. I get a memo each month of those locals who are not current. Remember, your per capita is due to the FPF office before the 15th of the month. If you are having problems, please let me know so I can help in some way.
