Brothers and Sisters in the 8th, February 25, 2016
We have welcomed in a new year since my last report. The first day of the new year brought tremendous sadness for our Brothers and Sisters in Tallahassee as we lost our beloved Chris Thurman to cancer. That same day brought the passing of IAFF 3rd District Vice President Michael Mullane. Both men were entered into the fallen firefighter registry.
We also had a recent tragedy in Escambia County where fire claimed the lives of four children last week. The children were relatives of Pensacola L-707 member Cedric King. Keep Brother King and the members of both Escambia and Pensacola Locals in your prayers.
We had a successful executive council/board and legislative week in Tallahassee earlier this month. We had 104 members in attendance at the Executive Council Meeting and walking the halls meeting their legislators. We had a respectable showing from the 8th and met with every legislator in the panhandle at some point during the week. Thank you to Pensacola L-707, South Walton L-3516, Crestview L-2680, Tallahassee L-2339 for your participation, engagement and professionalism. We had several guest speakers and presented the 2015 Legislators of the Year awards. Tallahassee Firefighters, L-2339 presented hand-made wooden axes to Representatives Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda and Alan Williams for their support.
The Executive Board and the FRS Committee met to discuss priority issues and plans for future legislative action. Other topics covered included results from a very favorable report from our statewide public opinion poll as well as a detailed presentation concerning the reapportionment maps for the Florida Senate, and how the new districts should perform.
The 33rd Annual King of the Hill Softball Game was rained out but that didn’t stop members from enjoying themselves sheltered under big tents. We also had our Florida Fire Service Caucus Reception that is jointly sponsored by the Florida Fire Chiefs, the Florida Fire Marshals and Inspectors Association, and the FPF.
The Florida Firefighter cancer partners put on a great display of support for firefighters who have been touched by cancer by displaying fire boots on the steps of the old Capitol. View the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=2kj2GgATBxo&app=desktop

If you have any thoughts don’t hesitate to share as we expect resolutions to come forth on this matter at convention in Jacksonville.
General ideas discussed at Eboard meeting

As you know, Mike Clelland, W/C Attorney, retired Firefighter and union leader from the Orlando area and former House Rep. is running for Florida Senate. He had a strong January with 211K raised. It is imperative that we support his campaign. Here are the two ways you can immediately help:
Letters of Endorsement - Type a letter of endorsement up on your Local letterhead and email it to firstname.lastname@example.org. If you need an example letter, shoot me an email.
Financial Contributions- If you have a PAC or simply round up some individual checks at a union meeting, this will serve to be critical for Mike’s campaign. I challenge every Local in the 8th to contribute in some way.

Straight from this week’s Legislative Report from President Tolley, we are entering the home stretch of the 2016 Legislative Session; with three weeks left, bills and deals are moving fast and furious or dying on the vine. You can be assured we are all working hard on your behalf, end quote. If you have any questions about legislation don’t hesitate to call me. President Tolley as well as other FPF officers put together a comprehensive weekly update, so if you are not receiving that and would like to, send me an email.
Stay safe and we will see you all soon!
